Blatant Design Plagiarism? No, just overuse of iStock. October 21, 2008

I was on the phone with a fellow designer this morning. We were catching up and she was telling me about how 2 firms in Franklin had merged into one, and how someone she knew had gone to work at this place. So, I asked for the web address, as I like to sniff around and see what other people are doing in design.

When I hit the homepage, still on the phone with my design friend, I said “oh my God, that’s the Twitter logo!” – she said “hang on” and looked and said “oh wow, you’re right! That branch is exactly the same… even the bird! I’m sending them an email.”

Now, I know artists are inspired by other artists and all that, but for a “creative firm” to blatantly copy a well known, and growing web application? That’s just stupid. And even more stupid that they are calling themselves “creative” and then ripping off someone else’s look and/or using the exact same clip art!

I’m calling them out.

Go see for yourself HERE.

UPDATED: Toni Birdsong, the owner of the firm, was kind enough to drop by and explain the situation in the comments. I maintain that using clip art can be dangerous business for this very reason. I’ve used iStock before, for example, but I don’t use it religiously for this reason. And I explain that in reply to the owner of the firm.
